Introduction

Date: 12th – 24th of August 2018

Deadline for application: 30th of April 2018!

This masterclass was created to give young students (from age 16) the possibility to get a first-hand introduction to the harpsichord. It is aimed especially at students who consider studying this instrument or who are already studying at a conservatory but want to get new impressions on how to play such an instrument. Last but not least this masterclass is the perfect opportunity for students who are preparing to participate in competitions. Under the guidance of the internationally renowned Prof. Gerald Hambitzer of the HfMT conservatory in Cologne you will have a week-long training schedule with this wonderful instrument and learn all the subtle techniques which are very different from the regular piano.
The masterclass takes place in the historical city of Bonn which is Beethoven’s birthplace. It has a long history with classical music which you can experience first-hand through all the concerts, competitions and music festivals that are being held in this city. Cologne, which in itself offers a huge amount classical entertainment and which is home to the HfMT conservatory, is also just 30 minutes away by train. Therefore this region is the ideal place for studying an instrument such as the harpsichord or other classical instruments.

Professor Gerald Hambitzer

Gerald Hambitzer is a sought-after soloist and chamber musician on harpsichord, clavichord and fortepiano. Born in Bonn in 1957, he initially received an extensive musical education with a major in harpsichord at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz (HfMT) in Cologne with Prof. Hugo Ruf. While still being a student, he began his international concert career, mainly as a harpsichordist with the renowned Baroque orchestra Concerto Köln, which has since taken him to all music centers in Europe as well as to guest tours to Algeria, India, Southeast Asia and America.
He has been a regular guest at various radio stations and has been involved in more than 60 CD productions for Capriccio, Harmonia mundi France, Sony Classical Naxos and Teldec Classics International. His recordings as a soloist in harpsichord concertos by J. S. Bach, C. Ph. E. Bach and F. Durante have earned him international recognition. In addition, his particular interest is the clavichord, to which he dedicated a CD recording on a historical instrument from 1756. In 2014 Professor Gerald Hambitzer completed a 2-week tour through China with Concerto Köln. Among other things, the 5th Brandenburg Concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach was performed, of which he was the soloist.
In 1999, Gerald Hambitzer was appointed professor and director of the Institute for Early Music at the HfMT and teaches the subjects of historical keyboard instruments, basso continuo practice and chamber music.

Class details

The masterclass begins on 12th of August 2018 and ends on 18th of August with one additional week for sightseeing until 24th of August 2018 (further details below).

The number of participants is limited to 8 people, so that each and every one is assured at least 1 hour of tutoring by the master himself whereas the non-active students may listen to the lesson of their fellow student. The lessons will be held in English! Therefore it is imperative for you to be able to speak this language without greater difficulties.

Between each lesson-day during the week you will have one day for practicing at the harpsichord. Since we have two harpsichords available, there will be more than enough time for everyone to practice what he or she learned the other day with Prof. Hambitzer. But this is not all: In addition to the lessons Prof. Gerald Hambitzer will hold a course in tuning the harpsichord, as well as an introduction in the intricate mechanics that give this instrument its unique sound at the end of your practice-days.

At the end of this masterclass you will get the opportunity to show your progress with the harpsichord by playing a concert together with the other participants in front of a public audience!

In addition you will also receive a certificate by Prof. Hambitzer for successfully participating in this masterclass.

Sightseeing

Since you are already in Germany it would be a shame to not visit the historical parts of Bonn and its region. Therefore we planned an extensive sightseeing trip for you in the week after your concert!

We will be visiting the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven as well as the Robert Schumann house (in which he died), take a boat trip on the Rhine (a world heritage) to a medieval little town and we will of course be visiting the HfMT conservatory in Cologne in which you might already be interested to enlist in as well as the famous Cologne Cathedral.

You would like to come with a friend or parents or don’t want to be an active participant yourself? No problem! You or your companion(s) are welcome to join in on this voyage for a lesser fee and may attend to the lessons as passive participant(s).

Accommodation

Your accommodation will be in a 4-star hotel in Bonn, from which you can reach the classroom by foot, as well as the city center. This way, you are free to explore the city after classes on your own if you like to.
The catering will consist of a breakfast in the hotel plus a little snack in the studio during lunch hours. You will have to provide for your dinner yourself. There are numerous restaurants nearby which we can recommend and that aren’t pricy at all.

How do I get to Germany?

Unfortunately we don’t have the means to book a flight ticket for you! Therefore, it is up to you to book a flight for yourself as well as apply for a visa, should you not be an EU citizen.

You can find all the application forms for your visa at the respective German embassy of your country. You can also take a look here::
http://www.germany-visa.org/schengen-visa/

We recommend that you apply for a Schengen Visa for tourists (which enables you to stay for 90 days per half-year).

If you travel by plane, be sure to book a flight that arrives on 11th of August 2018. Your flight back should be on 25th of August 2018 if possible. We recommend that you choose Cologne/Bonn (CGN) as your destination airport. From there you can take the airport bus directly to Bonn.

You could also choose the Frankfurt airport (FRA) which would however require you to buy a train ticket as well in order to get to Bonn:

How can I sign up?

We will have a pre-selection of the participants who will attend to Prof. Hambitzer’s lessons. Therefore you are required to send in a video in which you play one piece from each of 3 different musical eras. You are also welcome to introduce yourself in the video (who you are, what you do, etc.) but it is not strictly required. You can choose between:

  • Early Baroque (virginalists, Italien and South-German masters)
  • Baroque (German, Italian, French and Spanish masters)
  • Early Classic and Sensitive Style (Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Christian Bach with Sonatas and Fantasies)
  • Classic (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, etc. with early Sonatas)

The deadline is the 30th of April 2018!

You may play these pieces on a regular piano or harpsichord but please do not use an electronic keyboard.

You can upload the video to YouTube or similar video hosting websites (as non-listed or private videos if you don’t want to make them public). Keep in mind that you will also study these pieces together with Prof. Hambitzer, so choose something that you like playing and that you may want to perform in front of an audience (e.g. concerts and/or competitions).

Please use the contact form below to send us the link to your video together with your name, age, and the titles of the pieces you are playing. If you just like to be a passive participant, please say so as well (you don’t have to make a video then).
